Well, it turns out I couldn’t resist adding a little more functionality — I added a new “Custom Post/Page Settings” options box for each Post and Page, though it will only be enabled by purchasing the Pro version.

As I review the code, I was also able to tweek a few sections here and there to improve performance even more.

The changelog so far is:

Complete code review with an improved object-oriented design and several new classes.

Version 4.3 : 4108 lines in 9 files, with 8 classes and 114 functions.
Version 5.0 : 5153 lines in 29 files, with 34 classes and 176 functions.

* Added the ability to include social sharing buttons in the excerpt as well.
* Added a new “Custom Post/Page Settings” options box for each Post and Page (enabled by purchasing the Pro version).
* Added transient caching to the url shortening method.
* Modified the image discovery methods to improve performance.
* Removed support for the “Exclude Pages” plugin (social sharing buttons were not added to excluded pages). Social sharing buttons can now be disabled for individual Posts and Pages on the new “Custom Post/Page Settings” options box.

Just a thought…

You develop a new version, announce beta testing, publish the new version. Then I install supposedly already refined code and within 30 sec… blast! I find this bug. Nothing serious, but something did not work here and you are probably not happy either, right?

And especially I would be more than willing to beta test your plugin. We had a few exchanges in the past, you’ve been always listening to suggestions, I owe you that. But frankly speaking, as a user I had no incentive to check the forums daily. I did it only after I found the bug.

If you would make x.x.x+1 minor version update and announce next major version’s “release candidate testing” in the “what’s new” section – that would be the thing I (and I guess other caring users too) would read, respond and definitely try to help.

That would be a better channel to announce such things to your users, in my opinion.

I announced a 5.0 pre-release candidate over a week ago — in fact, I announced a few over the past week as I was inspired (and had the time) to code some additional features. I didn’t expect more than just a few people to see, and then download / test, the pre-releases.

This morning I spent a few hours looking at, fixing, and then testing some minor bugs. I made the DEV versions available as I went, so people could fix their issues quickly.

It’s always difficult to hang on to updates while there exists an issue in the stable version. This morning I released 5.0.1 quickly because I will not have time later today.

I don’t (yet) have a group of beta/pre-release testers, but that’s certainly something I’d like to setup. I may even offer “bug bounties” on the pre-release versions. ??
