FYI, I’m running SPS v1.15.2 due to not having a newer PHP installed on my server. This has worked fine up until the last couple of weeks it seems.

Also, I checked to see if there was a debug.log file in wp-content and there isn’t one.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I’ve made some progress in attempting to resolve this myself. It seems if I lower the limit of episodes under Settings > Reading to something like 10, then they load just fine. I previously had this set to 500 and it was working until a couple of weeks ago.

I don’t mind lowering it if necessary to get it to work, but I don’t know why it’s an issue now. Is there a better way to lower the size of my feed if that is in deed causing the issue?

    Please help. Thanks!

I’m still struggling with this issue. I have to reduce my feed size to less than a third of my episodes which I’m getting complaints for from my listeners. iTunes has stopped updating saying the connection to my feed has timed out. I’ve spoken with my hosting site and they don’t see any issues on the server side.

Can someone please help me with this? Thanks!

    HI @brermike,

Based on what you’ve laid out I would suppose that this is just a limitation of your site’s hosting provider to be able to serve up the details of your podcast feed.

Nothing about the plugin past v1.15.2 should make much of a difference in this issue, but curious is there a reason you can’t update your PHP version?

The fact that when you lower the volume of the feed (# of episodes) makes me think that this is an issue with your hosting provider not being able to serve up the page in time before iTunes declares that it’s not readable. What’s your website hosting look like?

Thank you so much for responding!

This is what I suspected as well, too. I’ve been asking them and sending them screen shots to try and get a solution but they haven’t found any issues on their end (yet). I didn’t think the plugin version would matter since it worked fine up until recently.

Our hosting site has to migrate our site to a different server in order to update our PHP version. I’d like to do this but I was waiting until closer to the holidays when traffic is lower due to some necessary some down time with our site.

DeluxeHosting hosts our site and we have plenty of bandwidth according to cpanel. Do you know of some questions or things I can tell them besides what you wrote above to help clue them in?

Again, I love your plugin and hope to get this figured out soon. Thanks again for your response and help!

    Hi there

    Thank you for your feedback.

Please confirm what version of PHP is currently being used on your website so that we can test further on our side? Also please confirm what version of WordPress you are currently running?

The plugin has undergone a variety of changes between 1.15 and 1.18 which will likely cause an issue over time not having the plugin up to date.

As Craig mentioned, It would be best to have everything up to date before testing this further on the site.

    Hi there,

My server is running PHP version 5.3.29 and WordPress version 4.9.1 (the latest one). I plan to eventually migrate our site to a new server with a later version of PHP, but I’m trying to resolve this issue first (assuming it’s not related).

Thanks for any and all your help!!

    Hi again,

I’ve gone back and forth with our hosting site and this is all they could offer. Does the following mean anything to you and could it be part of our issue?

“I have checked all the available server logs as possible for fixing the issue from my end. Only found one PHP error message from the logs:
    ….
[Fri Dec 08 21:44:56.190190 2017] [:error] [pid 9810] [client 164.132.161.42:44134] PHP Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/j2bdesig/public_html/tfppodcast.com/wp-content/plugins/seriously-simple-podcasting/includes/ssp-functions.php:395) in /home/j2bdesig/public_html/tfppodcast.com/wp-content/plugins/seriously-simple-podcasting/includes/class-ssp-frontend.php on line 986
    ….

I am not sure, is this a relevant log or not. However we can check this with your third party developer, because this may be an issue with the timing out.”

If not I may have to upgrade PHP and try the newer version of your software as I can’t keep having my episodes unavailable.

Thanks again for any help you can provide!

    Michael

I have accessed the RSS fields from my end without any issues, however I understand about your temporary issues. So finding the exact reason behind this timeout, could you please provide this log to the developer. Everything is fine in the server now.

    Hi Michael

While those errors come from our plugin, they’re highly unlikely to affect the availability or functionality of the player.

If it would be possible for the host to upgrade your version of PHP to the latest, I think that would be best as you’d be able to update our plugin along with a variety of others on your website. You’d also then be able to take advantage of new functionality in the plugin when doing so, while having the current issues resolved.
