• I’m using the default theme, uploaded the standard feddburner plug-in from Ordered Lists, signed up for a Feedburner account, activated the plug-in, linked my feed address. all worked like a charm but nothing is there.

RSS link still in footer doesn’t work. No other indication of Feedburner on my blog.

Do I need to remove the old feed? (How?) Do I need to drop a chicklet on the page? (How?)

Got it framed on the wall of my office. I followed it all except the bit about modifying the .htaccess file. don’t know what a private feed is. The example is Moveable Type rather than WordPress. Guess you know I’m a newbie.

Maybe one of the posts listed here will help?

/We all still technically newbies lol.. just like me, I’m no feedburner professional at all, period.. but, maybe someone else will help ya better though.. ??

A private feed is a special feed that FeedBurner grabs your RSS from, and that no-one else knows about. When FeedBurner grabs your RSS, it publishes it at https://rss.feedburner.com/Whatever.

You don’t need a chicklet. If done properly, the existing RSS links will be re-written to point to FeedBurner. What version of Steve’s FeedBurner plugin are you using? Though version 2.1 is out, I currently use version 2.02 (with my own hacks) because I can’t be bothered upgrading. I believe the new (v2.1) plugin also makes your feed links point straight to FeedBurner. The one I use doesn’t do that, so I also use the Feed Locations plugin in conjunction.

If you do want a chicklet anyway (e.g. to advertise the number of subscribers), the easiest way is to use Sidebar Modules. You can add the chicklet with the “HTML module” (you’ll see what I mean if you install it).

Jeremy: I have v2.1. I have a feedburner address (https://feeds.feedburner.com/myblog) but not a private feed I guess. Do I need one?

Any chance doing the installation steps out of sequence is a problem? I went to feedburner first and down/up-loaded the plug-in second. Steve has it the other way around.

Nah, I got my FeedBurner account first and then later used the plugin when I realised none of my traffic was going to the FB account.

You do need a private feed, but the FeedBurner plugin should do that automatically for you, provided you have set the permissions for the .htaccess file to be writable by the webserver.

Hmmm….I’m curious what it means to…

set the permissions for the .htaccess file to be writable by the webserver.

I’m also trying to figure out how to make my RSS links point to my FeedBurner address. Got FeedBurner plugin and FeedBurner new address for the blog all set up. However, the link in the blog does not redirect to the FeedBurner address.

The links showing in my blog header and sidebar point to https://www.mysite.com/feed and so does the original feed for my new feedBurner address (https://feeds.feedburner.com/myblog). Can you please help me? I’m definetely stuck…

    Thanks!

Oh! forgot to mention that https://www.mysite.com/feed/ directs me to the FeedBurner address – while https://www.mysite.com/feed does not. But the latter is being used for both the original feeds in FeedBurner and the RSS link. ??

You can read the article “Changing File Permissions” on the Codex for more information about file permissions. Basically what I meant was to check all the “read, write, and execute” boxes for the .htaccess file.

You can change the feed locations to point directly to FeedBurner by using this plugin in addition to the FeedBurner plugin.
