• Inspired by Root’s upcoming Aphrodite and the ideas which he has provided in this forum and his site, I’ve also developed a proof of concept theme that switches from 3 columns to 2 columns.

A couple of interesting (technical) notes:

    1. This theme utilises the fact that home.php executes before index.php.
    2. The front page is deliberately styled differently from the other pages
    3. The latest post is handled differently from older posts without any modifications to the WP setup or any special plugins.
    4. The latest post is dynamically generated and not hardcoded.
    5. The older posts (i.e. middle column) show the excerpts instead of the main content. For example, check out the post ‘These arena€?t the droids youa€?re looking for’ and compare with the front page

The design is a bit slapdash at the moment (esp. the css) but any feedback would be much appreciated. Anything goes really; how it looks on other browsers (esp. Safari as I don’t have a Mac), what I should be placing in the various columns, possible suggestions etc…

  • Wow, I think that looks pretty cool! It’s a little too narrow for my personal taste in the 2 column layout, but I’m just not one who likes those skinny blogs. But it’s not too bad even. I’m on FF and everything looks good here.

That looks really neat to me. Similar in set up to Aphrodite. These 3/2 col switchers are going to be very cool – I hope. :). Good to have you in the game. I know you will bend it to the max. That home.php is a very neat trick. I could not believe it when I stumbled on it in the darker recesses of the mighty Codex (oh great one) Good luck ??

Thanks again Root for pointing out that little trick with home.php! That theme is really only a stable version of the proof of concept which I’m playing around with on my local testbed.

When I get a bit more time, I’ll sit down and have a proper look at working things through as well as take a deeper look at the ever knowledgable codex.

The only problem with 3/2 col switchers is that they’re going to have to make up a new category for them in the WP theme lists:-)

I know. Think of the kerfuffle. ??

Wow. If that’s a “test”, I can hardly wait for the “real thing”!

Root, only a Scot knows what a kerfuffle is….

Well Project Aphrodite has just appointed a Creative Director to do the styling.
And then we hope to ship as soon as we can.

Cool! Looking forward to that too!
