feed wont fetch Items

Hi,
I have installed the plugin, and am trying to fetch items manually, but nothing is imported – the fetch process just gets stuck in a loop with a spinning circle.
I have gone through the troubleshooting check list, and checked the server has all the relevant PHP extensions installed and everything looks good.
I have also disables all the other plugins on the site and reverted to the twentynineteen theme & still no joy.
The site is not throwing any errors, and the response from the admin-ajax.php page is just:

repeated over and over
I have also tried using the WPbeginer feed from your demo site and this is not working either
Any suggestions what to try next would be most helpful

@bsaltd This could be an issue with WordPress Cron. We need WP Cron to be functioning correctly on your site to schedule tasks that regularly fetch or update feeds.
To troubleshoot, you will need to install the WP Crontrol plugin and try out some of the solutions listed in our knowledge base guide here.
