Feed Update Type not reset correctly?

For one site, I change the “Feed Update Type” from “Incremental” (When items no longer appear on the feed, keep them in the WordPress posts table) to “Complete” (When items no longer appear on the feed, they are obsolete; retire them from the WordPress posts table)
This seemed to consume too many resources from my server, so I reset the “Feed Update Type” back to “Complete”.
I deleted all “Retired” posts, emptied trash, but I still see posts being marked as “Retired”, even though the “Feed Update Type” is reset to “Complete” for all feeds.
