Hugh, congratulations on the success of your plugin and thank you for your time!

I’m the tech advisor for a very small non-profit that is recording books for handicapped children in the Middle East in their native languages.

There will be multiple feeds, one for each book. The rights to make the audio-books are being properly licensed from the copyright holders and one of the license restrictions is to limit access to the files.

    Questions:
Does your plug’s password mode provide a password for the feed RSS file or for the underlying podcast episode files? Does it work for multiple feeds? All of the feeds can share the same username/pw database.

If I change the location of the episode files to a directory with basic authentication enabled, will that enable people with the right username/pw combinations to access the files? Will that work with your plugin? In such a configuration, the RSS file could be openly available. Just the episode files would be protected–that would be fine.

Any other thoughts on how to organize this type of podcast series?

    Many thanks,
    Larry

    Hi Larry,

First off, let me tell you what SSP does offer in this regard:

    1. You can run as many different feeds as you like from the same site.
    2. You can password protect your feeds with a single username & password combination – the username & password will apply to all of your feeds and will be the same for each one.

Note that if you password protect the feed, then the files themselves are not password protected, only the actual RSS feed will be.

If you password protect the files themselves, but leave the feed open then the accessibility of each episode’s audio will depend on the platform used to access it. For example, if people simply load the files in their browser then they will be asked for the username and password before downloading, but if they open the feed in a podcast app then it will depend entirely on how the app handles password protected files as there is no standard way to do that.

I hope that helps you work out the best way forward for your organisation – let me know if you have any further questions!

    Cheers,
    Hugh

    Thank you Hugh!

Do you know any podcast apps that handle user_name/pw for the media file itself?

    Many thanks,
    Larry

I don’t unfortunately – you would have to ask a few of the app developers to see how they handle it. I’m sure most of the more popular apps handle it just fine, but I honestly can’t say for sure either way.
