I am a WP newbie. If this is a stupid question, don’t hold back…
Tried searching on this, but obviously I am using the wrong terms. I am wanting to set up a list of “featured” articles. Basically, a list of my the most relevant posts, across all categories and time periods. So if I have say, 5 posts each in 13 categories, I would like to be able to display a list of arbirtrarily-selected posts – the list being called “Featured Items” in this case.
Does this require hacking in and establishing some sort of status column for post items, or is there already some way of doing this?

i dont exactly understand your requirement. but you can exclusive make a seperate category for featured posts… if that’s what u want…

I’d create a category called “Featured Items”.
Using the title permalink, I would use the Link Options to create a link to each post that you want featuring.
This means they can be in any category.
If you wanted ‘random’ articles (even from a limited list), then you’ll be needing some sort of script to select them for display.

Thanks both. Ah, great I had not really noticed that links could be categorized as well. Derrr. Slightly clunky, but it will suit my needs perfectly adequately.
I’ll post a link to the site in this thread as an illustration shortly.
    Thanks again.

    anaxamaxan,
Have you looked at the sticky-post hacks? That’s close in definition to what you are looking for.
I have sticky-post status only applying to non-category-list pages, but you can customize it to apply everywhere, or specific pages, whatever.
My homepage shows sticky-status in action — the first ‘group’ of posts are the sticky ones, the rest are ‘normal’ published status.
