    Try add this code to your theme’s function.php :

    add_theme_support( ‘post-thumbnails’ );

    Hi, thanks for the response but I managed to fix it last night. After a long process of elimination I found that the problem for me was Jetpack.

    One of the modules/features of jetpack is call photon and it tries to speed your site up by loading all images on your site via the WordPress servers; this must have been interfering with the plugin because when I deactivated this feature if jetpack the plugin started working again.
