nothing wrong – the theme simply does not show the featured image in post previews, or otherwise – apart from using large sized featured images as header images.

You don’t. You first create a child theme for your changes.

And then what? Put the code into the child theme?

Yes – into a copy of the relevant template file in your child theme.
