Featured images cropped

I’m using Facebook Auto Publish to publish posts to
https://www.facebook.com/srp.org.uk/
The format is
News from {BLOG_TITLE} – {POST_TITLE}
and posting method
Attach Your Blog Post
The featured image appears sensibly most of the time but sometimes, it seems if it’s bigger than about 350×350, instead of being shown as a thumbnail it occupies the whole width of the facebook post but is cropped vertically to an aspect ratio of about 2:1. You can see examples on the page eg the post of 26 May.
Is there any explanation of this or any way of controlling? I see you recommend a much larger image size, but only small images seem to work properly.
