So I am trying everything I can to stop adding featured images as a square but see no options to stop doing this. I upload an image to my library (2400×1256) and add it as a featured image but it makes it 1:1 aspect ratio. I just want it to scale down, that s it!!!! I’ve seen some stuff about functions.php but there is nothing in mine current theme that has anything to do with changing thumbnail sizes.

Most likely this is a function of your theme. Test by switching to another like twentytwentyone.

Yeah, it I all the same, every single theme I use, the “create post” window is all the same…I never get any option to NOT crop my freaking thumbnail…this is so frustrating!!! Just stop cropping my thumbnails. Just scale it as needed….

I’ve even gone into the Settings > Media and changed the thumbnail dimensions to mirror the aspect ratio od all my featured images, but it STILL crops my images everytime I add one to a post.

I can’t reproduce that with twentytwentyone on a “clean” (i.e., no plugins, just WP core) site. So, if this happens on every theme, then maybe it’s a plugin thing? Try disabling all plugins and see if it still happens.

Ok, first off, what SHOULD I bee seeing? Even when I first started this website thing, I had ZERO plugins and it did this…

In the post creating area…(the blocks and all), to teh right is all the options for the post. Under featured image, I just add my featured image but it has always come up cropped into a square. Even though in my gallery, the image is shown in full?

I don’t understand why this is so hard to do..it’s just a frreakin picture…

The little square on the edit page shows a square, but when I look at the resulting post, it’s sized properly

Nope…mine does not do that. I literally followed your everystep. Except in the preview square on the right, my image is completely sqaure and deson’t have that white space on teh sides. When I preview the ipost it is sqaure

If a now-removed plugin or theme had added and image size or modified the defaults, those derived images will remain and be unchanged unless you rebuild your thumbnails. There are a number of plugins that do that.

    ok, let me try that

It’s kind of working…I was able to rebuild the first one I tried, but can’t seem to be able to do it for any consecutive ones. It may be an issue with the plug in but all the plugins I see avaialble say that they are untested with my version of wordpress

What version is that? (BTW, 5.7 just dropped.)

OK, I got it now…yes, seems to be a specific order of steps I need to take to get this accomplished.

I think I have it at this point. I would never have figured this out on my own…THANK YOU!!!!
