Featured image import

For a moderately large website, I have exported and imported all posts (approximately 18,000). What is the correct method for adding the featured image?

I noticed the option ‘set first image as featured image’, but some posts do not contain any images in their content, yet they still have a featured image.

How can I import the featured image into the featured image field on the new site?
