Featured Image Cropping on Upload

Hi,
I’m not sure why it does this, but any new images I upload and select as a post featured image, it crops to a certain size. For instance, I have a square feature but it becomes a narrow rectangle.
Is there a way I can change this? (I have a child theme set up, but not sure what code will overwrite the action).
