• Is there a way it would be possible to add a ‘convert to text on Publish’ option to Zotpress, such that the shortcodes are converted in the edit view to their text output. This would address the concern in a new academic blogging plugin, while still giving the option to keep shortcodes. In one other use case, some of my posts (from a category) get copied to a work blog, but at the moment the citation outputs don’t work on that blog (because zotpress isn’t installed). Swapping out the shortcodes also makes the text much more readable in the back end (because I can see what’s actually being cited).

I suppose I don’t see the benefit of building this into Zotpress when you can already use the Zotero browser plugin to select references, “Create Bibliography from items,” copy to clipboard, and easily paste into the visual editor. But perhaps I’ve missed something?

I can definitely see that. I think the advantage here is the in-wordpress zotero-like functions zotpress provides. Being able to convert that is a bit different to inserting citations as plain text in the first place. The disadvantage is losing the tie to the zotero data (and obviously the development time). The advantage is the stability of the citations (after removing the plugin, transferring posts to other sites), readability when editing essentially ‘fixed’ posts (because the shortcodes are hard to read in the back end). Don’t know if that’s enough to sell it!

Sorry that I’m not totally following — what in-wp functions do you mean?

Sorry, I’m not being clear. Like searching for citations in your library, inserting inline (with page refs) and creating an automatic bibliography. All the things zotpress provides really.

Not sure about search but I can imagine for in-text + automating the bib. Still I can imagine this being confusing/frustrating for people who want to change it later and can’t because it’s plain text. Hmm … I’ll think more about it, but I can’t promise anything soon. I wonder if there’s not a plugin for your circumstances that exports blog posts with shortcodes rendered?
