• I haven’t seen whether this has been asked before (worded differently perhaps?).

When updates are available for plugins it is possible to view version details.

Will this be possible for themes too?

At the moment I have to visit the theme website and hope that they show a changelog (I’ve just updated one theme where the theme website was a version behind!).

If this won’t happen, how to people track the changes to themes more easily, prior to updating?

  • Why would you need to track changes to a theme?

    Why do themes get updated?

Is there a reason why I shouldn’t know what has been changed?

Themes get updated to fix bugs or add new requested features. If you are using a child theme or the original theme, I don’t see what the issue is with not knowing exactly what has been changed. Added to which, not all theme devs publish changelogs. There aren’t any for the Twenty * series, for example.

The issue is exactly what you have described: fix bugs or add new requested features.

It is time for the theme side of updates to catch up with plugins. There should be changelogs and it is something I’d like WordPress to implement.

At the present time, the theme review guidelines do not recommend changelogs – let alone mandate them. Perhaps this is something you need to take up with the theme review team?
