Feature Request: Show Only Upcoming Holidays

  • It would be wonderful if instead of showing all the holidays, the hours table only showed the ones coming up within a month or a couple weeks.

    It would also be nice if the hours table properly took the holiday into account when it displayed its hours, for instance consider a business with 8AM-6PM hours and then 12AM-8PM hours on Black Friday. In the month preceding the holiday it might look like this:

    Monday-Friday 8AM-6PM
    Saturday Closed
    Sunday Closed
    Black Friday (Nov 25th) 12AM-8PM

    Then on the week of it would instead look like this:

    Monday-Thursday 8AM-6PM
    Friday 12AM-8PM (Black Friday)
    Saturday Closed
    Sunday Closed

    I see 2 requests:

    1) only show the holidays coming up within a month: Could be handy to declutter the UI. But then we’d need to clearly label that these are only upcomming holidays so that the user doesn’t think that the business is open on New Years when it’s still April, for example.

    The only way I see that happening is with a button/link ‘show all holidays’, that expands the list to show everything. But then, the UI isn’t so decluttered anymore – so I’m not sure if it’s worth implementing.

    It’s probably not the most needed feature at this point, but could be a good one when the TODO list is empty ??

    2) Yes, I agree that would be a good addition. That’s something I’ll definitely work on, but it’s going to take some rewriting. Also: the name ‘Black Friday’ will have to be entered in the settings, b because otherwise it would bloat the plugin if I have to put all the legal holidays from all supported countries in a database.

    1) I can see what you’re saying, however how many people will check a businesses hours and then remember those hours for more than a couple weeks, and then not bother to check them again “just-in-case” around the time of the holiday? This seems like catering to a tiny number of users with photographic memory and arrogant confidence.

    I would also point to what the biggest player in business directories has done. Google does not display a businesses’ holiday hours until a week before, and Google has a stake in making sure the user does not go to a shop thats closed.

    You could put this behind a feature checkbox as well with a settable threshold for how far ahead to show holidays and let businesses decide where they want to draw the line.

    2) Agreed, you’d want people to be able to set any holidays they want. Some cities might even have their own regional “holidays” like the local chili cook-off ??
