As we use more and more tools and plugins, particularly plugins that import images from other services or ones that automatically assign a featured image, the number of duplicates in the media library grows.

How do we remove duplicate images from the media library, AND more importantly relink the remaining canonical images remaining wherever they appear in posts or featured images? Additionally, I would ideally like the canonical image to inherit any missing metadata from deleted images.

Typical view of my media library

I am aware that Media Deduper finds and allows me to delete duplicate images. However, as I understand, it does NOT relink images in posts (only in featured images). Media Deduper has the right idea, generating an index and hash of all images and spotting duplicates based on more than just filename. But it doesn’t go far enough in relinking images in posts. If I have a hundred duplicate images scattered over a scores of posts, deleting them without relinking is not a useful solution.

It seems like it would be a fundamental need for anyone who had more than a few hundred posts and/or a few thousand images culled from a variety of sources. If this was a feature of the Pro version, I’d be willing to pay for it.

  • Hi Wes,

Thanks for your message. We are, in fact, in the process of working on a Pro version that will be more sophisticated in handling image references, going beyond just Featured Images.

Finding image references in the actual body of posts is actually quite challenging, so while that’s on our roadmap it will be some time before we’re able to release something we think is reliable even for Pro. But we’re actively working on at least making it smarter for some other postmeta keys, and hope to have at least a rudimentary in-body solution in the not-too-wildly-distant future.

    Hi Wes,

This feature is available in our brand-new Media Deduper Pro plugin! For more info and to purchase it, check our website at https://cornershopcreative.com/product/media-deduper/.

In Pro, the Smart Delete feature will allow you to delete duplicate images and have those images replaced in:

    • Links to the image file
    • img tags (including resized versions) in WordPress posts, pages, and other content types
    • Gallery shortcodes with hand-picked images like [gallery ids=”123,456,789”]
    • WooCommerce product gallery images
    • Yoast’s Facebook and Twitter images
    • Featured images

Let us know if you have any questions!

    Hi, thanks for the note.

Just to clarify: The new pro version will identify duplicates within the post content, remove the duplicates, and relink the image references? Does that work for both attached and linked images? Does it handle resized images?

How does it handle metadata like titles and captions? My preference would be to optionally merge data with an optional preference for earliest or latest.
