I was reading over how to verify Bing/MSN crawlers, which I’d like to do. For whatever reason they love my site and it ranks well enough to be a significant traffic source. They have an article on it here:

    https://www.bing.com/webmaster/help/how-to-verify-bingbot-3905dc26

In an all-caps headline they specifically say this:

“DON’T USE HARDCODED IP ADDRESSES OR ADDRESS RANGES

So, by using the reverse/forward DNS lookup method you can easily verify that an IP address is coming from Bing. “

I noticed there is a way to block hostnames, which I’ve done for some scrapers and spam. Why not have a way to whitelist hostnames as well as IP addresses? IP addresses change enough for these mega servers that it’s definitely the wrong approach.

Love the plugin – thanks for the support.

    Hi,

We do have a similar feature planned but don’t have a specific date when it may be implemented yet (reference number FB839). Thanks for the suggestion!
