• Hi Jeroen,

This is a great plugin and I’m enjoying using it.

I’ve adde some custom HTML ( and <b> tags) to the description field. This is great, but export only allows me to create a CSV back up, so doesn’t include that rich text. I recognise from this forum that that the CSV export feature is new, which is great. However, the delete button doesn’t issue a confirmation, which makes an accidential click very dangerous.

On a future version, could you add a confirmation modal dialog box to the delete button to prevent accidential deletion?

On a second matter, I’m using this plugin with the Welsh language. Welsh uses letters ‘ch’, ‘dd’, ‘ll’, ‘ph, ‘rh’, ‘ng’ and ‘ff’ which have no single Unicode or ASCII character, which makes manipulating words as data difficult.

Is there a feasibility of being able to recognise those as a single letter, which would allow a startswith to recognise them. If there is, you’re welcome to send me an email on [email protected] about potential ways and costs of making this happen.

    With many thanks,

    Neil Rowlands

    Hi Neil, @parallelcymru36472,

thanks for getting back to me.

    1. I wil definitely create a confirm-delete alert! Good suggestion ??

    2. I have been busy with multi-byte characters, so for example Danish, Norsk, Arabic and Chinese characters are supported. I have no experience with Welsh, am I understanding correctly that you want the Index Character to be two characters?

    Kind regards,

    I have just released version 1.9.3 with a confirm-delete button ??

Thanks Jeroen, you work quickly! The confirm delete is very helpful.

Making the plugin international-friendly sounds great, especially if unicode characters are to be supported.

Practically, this might require a bit of a change in the back end as different users will have different requirements. Extending alphabet lists to other alphabets such as Arabic is great, and it is clear that a letter starting with ? is going to want it as a standalone grouping. However, with Western accents and variants there is a wider range of possibilities. For example, some people would want a word such as être to be listed under e; others may want it to be listed it separately under ê.

My request would be to provide a way for the user to specify initial characters/character pairs that Name Directory picks up and lists as a separate items. For example, someone could specify ‘ê’, or in my case a multi-character pair of ‘ch’. Then there would be one heading for e and another for ê, or one for c and another for ch.

I don’t know how much work would be involved in this, but allowing the user to set their own preferences seems to be the simplest and most flexible solution, and better for you in the long term as you don’t have to become a linguistic expert and try to provide something that works for all users.

Happy to discuss further and/or test if you wish.

    Hi @parallelcymru36472,

the plugin does support unicode at the moment, althought I have tried and some users (so other topics) told me that they have also tested it with success. I am not a linguistic expert and I come from the Netherlands, where we “just” use the default charactersets.

Giving the users an extra field to specify their own Index Letter is a neat idea. However, I do want this plugin to be as simple as possible for everyone and I made a few extensions so far like HTML input for descriptions and some other stuff. Asking the user for another input letter might become confusion for the beginner level users. I can prepopulate the fiels offcourse, but I might want to add an “advanced view” checkbox or something like that. The same applies for the view in the front-end, where people can submit names too.

It’s a good idea, but I will have to think about how I want to implement it.

    Thanks for your contribution Neil!

Not a problem, thanks for taking the time to consider the situation Jeroen.

I agree that this is a minority use case and would belong in more of an advanced users pane.

You’re welcome to drop me a line if you think you may want to take this forward.

    Much appreciated!

    Hey @parallelcymru36472 / Neil,

I haven’t decided yet about the issue, but I was wondering, are you familiar multibyte languages in PHP?

    Kind regards,

    Jeroen Peters

P.S.: I think it’s cool how you’ve integrated the Name Directory in your website!

Cool- I’m quite sure that you didn’t envisage it being used in the way that I have!
Fell free to use it as an example implementation.
The only problem with doing what I did was manually coding HTML underlines- but the time was worth it. I’m getting a good response to that page and only launched it yesterday. Thank you for providing the tool Jeroen.

Unfortunately I’ve never got around to learning PHP, although I’m familiar with HTML.

If you have a separate Name Directory plugin to test (ie that sandboxes the test data from the live version) then I’m happy to play around with any things you try regarding multi-character support.
