Commented code in Visual view shouldn’t look like a blank line

  • It’s very frustrating to not be able to see a marker that shows something invisible is in the code. A good site designer uses Comments [<!–notes here–>] to see what she/he was thinking or to disable code/words for a while.

    The frustration is that in Visual view, we don’t see any kind of a marker. We only see blank lines.
    So:
    1) We MUST work in Text view
    2) It is too easy to delete the contents of our comments.

    Can that Commented out area be ignored in Visual OR can we see an icon, please?

    Exactly. Visual view gives you an approximation of what your readers will see once you publish a post or page.

    It adds a marker to show where it adds clear float div to a web page. There should be a way to do something similar to this plugin, only with a pop-up where you could enter a comment. But it would require some way to work backwards, so that you could click on the marker and see and edit your comment.

    It would be possible to adapt that plugin to wrap text in comment tags instead of div tags, but as Gutenberg is going to wipe out the visual editor, and that’s where this plugin sits and does its magic from, I’m not developing it any further for the time being.

    @kjodle one small light yellow icon won’t make it impossible or difficult for a person to see what his or her page will look like. This has been the practice in WYSIWYG design since the very first web app.

    A plugin may be great but I still stress my wish for this feature.

    Yeah, you’re probably not going to ever see this in core, as you’re the only person I’ve seen asking for it.

    In the meantime there is Gutenberg (i.e., the solution in search of a problem), and if that is extensible, perhaps there will a plugin to add it as a Gutenberg block.

    This kind of need is exactly the thing that plugins are meant to do.
