I’m just testing out the gutenberg editor and have a request that many wordpress users with visual problems regarding flashing images will need.

When I highlight a block the block is outlined and the block type appears in the upper right corner. This is going to cause major issues for people like me who can’t tolerate a lot of flashing images. What would be essential for people like me is an option to either change the colour of these to something very light with minimal contrast, or to be able to turn them off altogether. (or to have both options, since it’s nice to see what block type you’re using but not throwing up is also great…).

At the moment I’m editing a lot of pages quite quickly and jumping from one block to another is making me sick, so I’m going to have to switch back to the old editor for now. I do really like everything else I’ve seen so far though.

Edited to add: Just wanted to add the severity of this issue since it might not seem important. Not being able to turn the block outlines off would render WordPress completely unusable to me.

  • Hi @knittingand and thanks for your report! Makes totally sense to me.

I opened new issue for this where I suggested using grey color instead of blue.

Feel free to hop in there or if you don’t have Github account you can give feedback in here.

    Thanks!

Can we have an option to turn it off too? Or make it the same color as the background?

I don’t think option to turn it off would be the best solution.

    • WordPress aims for decision not options thinking.
    • Accessibility should come out of the box.

With that said there could be a plugin that have these kind of options if the issue itself isn’t fixed.

The only way to make that particilar feature totally accesible straight out of the box would be to give the end user control of the colour. Whilst someone like me needs the flashing to disappear (make it the same colour as the background), someone with a visual impairment might need the contrast to be as strong as possible.

Another option might be to make the boxes visible all the time, not just appear when a box is clicked in.
