I’ve added a counter. The latest version is available here: https://github.com/AtomicSmash/ACF-limiter-field.

You will see a new option in the backend – “Display character count”.

Please test and if everything works I’ll update the WordPress version.

EDIT: I missed you mentioning the setting on the backend. Works fine now!

I would just throw an IF statement around the option to show the count so that if I have debugging on (which developers often do) it does not throw an undefined index error.
