fb- prefix, can i insert a normal username instead?

For some reason when users register using Facebook, they are only given a username like this fb-1, fb-2. and this is really not that nice to look at for my users, and they really would prefer if they could use a normal username.
Is that possible?
is this plugin even in active development anymore?
