The issue can be easily resolved by adding exif PHP extension support on hosting server, but I can’t find the reason for using this extension functions in WordPress captcha plugin.

I just wanted to bring to your attention, that my server was hacked tonight. It was a simple header injection that replaced the homepage of sites.

It was fixed by reinstalling WordPress.

While working through that process, I came on to one of my sites using this plugin. On that site, the login function was broken with a php error referencing this plugin, and the captcha.php file.

Not much to go on – I downloaded Captcha again, ftp’d it up, and was able to log in again to WordPress. I am wondering if Captcha was the source of the vulnerability to inject something onto my server.

I can’t replicate it, didn’t take screenshots in my haste to repair my client sites on my server, but I thought I would let you know.

    My mistake here – apologies.

its not the WP 4.4 that made the error to the site itself – i was upgrading a lot of plugins etc, and the 4.1.6 here does not work in the website i was using. but its not because of new WD 4.4 – i was still using WP 4.3.1.

So ive gone back to Version 4.1.5 – it works.

I will upgrade to WP4.4, but whether the plugin here will work for 4.1.6 and WD 4.4, no idea! But certainly WP 4.3.1 and the plugin using 4.1.6 doe snot work

Unrelated to the above post, but on the topic I mentioned (I know – open my own thread – next time, just wanted to let you know).

This was the error message I received on sites using this plugin. I received this error on the login page.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function exif_imagetype() in /home/youruser/public_html/yoursite.org/wp-content/plugins/captcha/captcha.php on line 1380

BroadRippleUnlimited – read my last post…..probably exactly the same reason why its gone wrong for u also

richard – thanks for your testing and explanation. I don’t have 4.1.5 in my archive. Can’t find it online. Any idea where we can get the older version? I’ve uninstalled 4.1.6 because it locks me out of my dashboard, but I hate running without it! Thx again!

    Hi,

We apologize for any inconvenience this issue might have caused you.

Mentioned problem (undefined function exif_imagetype) was fixed in the plugin version 4.1.7. Please update the plugin. If you have no access to your dashboard, you can update it via FTP:

    1) Download and install FTP client (for example, Filezilla).
    2) Open FTP client and enter your FTP access credentials (host, username and password) to access files on your server.
    3) Navigate to ‘yourwordpresswebsite/wp-content/plugins’ directory.
    4) Disable necessary plugin by removing (deleting) its folder.
    5) Add new plugin folder.
    6) Open your WordPress admin Dashboard > Plugins and activate the plugin.

Also, we’d like to note that our plugin is compatible with WordPress versions 3.8 – 4.4.

    Sincerely,
    BestWebSoft Support Team
