Fatal Error – Website will not open anymore

  • I am new to WordPress and I was attempting to look into adding some functionality to an existing WordPress site and attempted to upgrade WordPress. It generated an error immediately and now the site will not load no matter what I try. I found several threads on this error and ultimately it appears my option is to FTP into the site and attempt some sort of fix, but all efforts to connect to FTP are giving me an authentication failed message even though I know I am using the correct admin username & password. I have tried connecting to multiple paths just in case. I am at a lost. To my knowledge, there are no backups on the user side and I can not connect to the site even if we had them. Are there options on the server side to restore a site to a point in time or some other options I could consider?

    Hi,

    It would appear your theme is trying to use the same function names as WordPress core does, so yes you will need some kind of file access to sort this out.

    Does your hosting provider have any kind of control panel for you to use, these will usually come with some form of file manager that you can use, if so just rename the wp-content/themes/sliding-door directory to something else, and the default theme will be used and your site will be accessible again, you may then see if there’s an update to your theme which makes it compatible with the later versions of WordPress (for reference, WordPress 4.4 introduced the function that is causing you issues here).

    If the host does not provide a control panel, opening a ticket with them and asking them to perform the steps above is perfectly valid as well, and is something they should be able to do with ease.
