Fatal Error Upgrading to 2.5

  • I received this error when accessing the wordpress/wp-admin/upgrade.php link.

    Fatal error: Call to undefined method wpdb::supports_collation() in /home/travelp1/public_html/blog/wp-admin/includes/schema.php on line 9

    Line 9 says:
    if ( $wpdb->supports_collation() ) {

    Can anyone help with this error? I have never seen it before and have no idea how to fix it short of re-installing wordpress from scratch.
