• I just found out my website has been down due to Out of Memory error. I cannot login to the control panel so I logged in via FTP and copied the plugin folder onto my computer and began deleting plugins one at a time but even after deleting all of the plugins, I’m still getting the error message and cannot login. Any suggestions?

  • Unfortunately, I only get 30MB of PHP Memory without switching to a Dedicated Server.

Which is why so many sites are doing so well with this host…find a good host…

Thanks everyone. I didn’t realize the error was changing. I see what you mean that it’s now pointing to core files. I’m deleting the /wp-admin and /wp-includes and downloaded the 3.8 version and will re-upload those core files and the ones in the root directory to the server. Will let you know the results.

Well, unfortunately, I’m still unable to load the site nor login to the control panel. Any other ideas?

Pioneer, do you have any recommendations for a better webhost? I’ve been using 1and1 for the past 9 years and have many sites that are using WordPress without issues.

I do not, per forum rules, suggest hosting other than those annotated (by whomever has decided to list web hosts) here. My remark is based on # of posts seen of late relating specifically to that web host.

    Try these searches on GOOG:

    site:www.remarpro.com 1&1
    site:www.remarpro.com 1and1

    Now, filter for last week…

I guess ‘&’ and ‘and’ have the same results?

    Understood. Thx for the input.

Any ideas on what else I can try to get this site up and running?

So far, I’ve deleted ALL of the plugins from the server.

I deleted the /wp-admin and /wp-includes filer and re-uploaded them from a fresh download of the 3.8 version and did the same for the files that were in the root directory but still receive the same out of memory error.

My webhost suggested to remove the themes so I deleted the three default themes but still no change.

I’m stumped but am hoping there are some folks here that are much more versed in WordPress than I am that can help me get the site up and running again.

I’m personally vouching for hostgator (with English persons) and OVH (with French people, although OVH now opened a datacenter in Canada, so maybe they’re providing services for the Americans too, I ought to check some day; and their dedicated servers are the best).

But if you’re to stay with your current hosting company, maybe you could ask them to move both your site and your database to another server/cluster ?
Who knows, maybe you’re in the wrong neighborhood.

Sabinooo, that’s exactly what 1and1 suggested. Apparently, I’m on an old server so I upgraded to a better package which includes 128MB of PHP memory.

Did upgrading to a better package through 1and1 solve your problems. it sounds like I am going through the same thing you did. They are upgrading my package, has been down for two days now. I cannot access my site, and it is down. I have not attempted removing plugins via FTP yet.

Yes it fixed the issue with one site but now I can’t login to another site because of same error. Site is working fine but I cannot login to the backend

@youthman, thanks for posting. I’m having a similar issue with a site I’m creating for a client who also has 1and1 hosting. My fatal error messages started showing up when I tried to install JetPack. Removing Jetpack and other plugins have not helped. Are your multiple sites all within the same account? I’m not sure if I should tell my client to upgrade hosting or switch services, the website is fairly simple and small.

Yes, I have over 50 websites hosting under a single 1and1 package.

Maybe 1/3 of those are WordPress websites.

    Hi guys,

I don’t know if anyone is still having the fatal memory error but in case you do, i found a possible solution.

As others have noted, removing plugins helps but doesn’t fix the problem. That’s because the problem is something else.

In my case (and someone else I saw online) the problem was caused by an entry in the theme settings. One of the text entries was getting a whole bunch of //////’s added to the text entry every time the page was saved. When I got the memory error, the entry had gone from “This is where my studio is” to “This is//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// where my studio is” but with about a thousand slashes!

I suggest that anyone having the memory problem look through their text entries in theme settings for a similar problem. Not sure what causes it but sure glad to know how to fix it.
