• I have attempted to login and get directed to download an update before being able to login. I select the option and then get redirected to the following:

Fatal error: Call to undefined method wpdb::esc_like() in /home/content/26/8459026/html/wp-admin/includes/schema.php on line 565

This issue goes back to the update last October – all of my blog post drafts went live on their own, and then I started having issues editing anything and gradually, I lost all ability to login and then pages started to disappear as well…

I know literally nothing about code and have been unable to find someone who can use any of the tips in other threads to help recover login capabilities, the site, or at the very least, the page + post content from my backups.

If possible, I would love a referral to a human for help – otherwise I literally need step by step hand holding on this in non-tech speak – imagine you are trying to help your mom turn on the computer level – Many thanks in advance!

  • Your website sounds like it is broken, possibly infected with malware.

I could give recommendations but it would be impossible to talk my mum through them!

If you can login somehow, install and run gotmls anti-malware scan (install the plugin) and then install themes security to lock it down.

Otherwise, you might have to start again – brand new Wp install. There is import/export capabilities but only if you can login.

You could try a brand new install – then export old database and import into new install database and rebuild from there.

    – What WP version are you working with?
    – try MANUAL updating to 4.2.2. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete the old copies of files & folder on your server before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first.

Thanks @shannonWhitty – This might be what happened, but I definitely cannot login to try those options.

Try downloading the same version of WordPress you are currently using from www.remarpro.com. using FTP or whatever file management tools your host has provided you with, copy the downloaded files over the existing files.

Try logging in – if still no, navigate to your wp-content/plugins directory and rename plugins to plugins-old.

See if that lets you log back in, that will remove (not delete) your plugins from being activated.

Once you’re in, install gotmls malware scanner and run a full scan

@tara – I’m not sure which version it’s in now – I tried an update in October and that’s when I started having login issues.

I’ve read through the manual update instructions before and after step 2, it reads like Chinese to me (which I don’t speak)…

When it says “deactivate plug-ins” I don’t know what that means. I opened the file on my desktop and within the wp-Content folder, there is a folder titled “plugins,” but within that, there is only one folder called “akismet” and two notes titled “hello.php” and “index.php”… I had more, but do I just delete the plugin folder to deactivate all the plugins? is there another place I should be looking?

Step 3, I have no context for in my brain. What is an FTP and do I have one?

I care more about recovering the written page/post content than getting this particular site back online – Does this live somewhere in these files? Is there an easy way to recover that?

Thanks for your patience and feedback!

Does an FTP have to do with the org I use for hosting?

(I should mention in 2011 I had a 3rd party set up the site that is no longer in business. I’ve renewed my hosting each year, but other than making a payment, I haven’t used that to do anything for the site – I’ve just been working in WordPress…)

I’m not sure which version it’s in now

version can be found at least two ways:

    1. in the dashboard.
    2. If you have no access to dashboard, look in the version.php located at: /wp-includes/version.php

What is an FTP and do I have one

    FTP
    – Or, also, you can use your web-host’s cPanel or whatever file management application your host provides.
