    Hey guys,

So I’ve noticed a few times that after you update the plugin my homepage disappears and I get the message: “Fatal error: GCE_Display::get_event_days(): The script tried to execute a method….” See link below for full message. When this message appears on the page, none of the homepage content gets displayed. Only this message.

I understand these updates are necessary, and I do very much appreciate the hard work you guys put into this, but is there anyway to avoid messing up the whole page? I don’t mind if the plugin is down for a while, but when it disables the whole homepage, its kinda rough.

Any ideas on how I can avoid this?

    Thanks & happy holidays!
    Adam

  • I’m also a MediaTemple user and just ran into this bug as well. I’ve never had an issue with it locally while developing or remotely (on Dreamhost or WPEngine).

I’ve renamed the object-cache.php file and I’ll monitor the site to see if that fixes things. I assume that we’re effectively disabling the object cache by renaming the file… but does anyone know how that affects MediaTemple’s (or GoDaddy’s) cacheing overall?

(For example: I don’t know much about it, but WPEngine’s cache includes an object cache and a page cache.)

Yes that is correct. We are still learning about how this affects things. From what I can tell though, it should not affect your caching too much differently. The object-cache.php is meant to help with caching objects for WP (like transients and other DB stuff).

It could differ from different hosts because it can be used with a bunch of different caching systems. For example, I know that the issue with GoDaddy was narrowed down to them using the Varnish Cache – it could be different for others, or it could be configured differently and be the same engine.

    Let me know if you:

    1. Still have any issue after renaming the object-cache.php file.
    2. Notice any big differences in the caching on your site by disabling the object-cache.php file.

This seems to be the best solution so far, but the more we can learn from you guys about it and what you are experiencing then the better we can be at it in the future and hopefully find a fix where we don’t have to have you manually renaming a file.

    Thanks!

Nick, as always, I appreciate your great diligence in this. You guys are rock stars.

    1. So yes, this has certainly seemed to eradicate the Fatal Error issues. As for my website, I am not aware of it reoccurring since changing the file name.

    2. However, I’m not actually sure what to look for regarding your second question. Right now all I can tell you is that there hasn’t been any known issues of any kind on my site. But if you have anything more specific to look for, I’ll do so.

As of now, it’s been smooth sailing.

    Thanks again!

Still going smooth for everyone who has made the change to the object-cache.php?

Correct. Haven’t had a problem since changing the file name.

    Same here.

Thanks for reaching out on a separate post. Same issue. Renamed the file and it seems to work fine. Will monitor and report if there is any change.

Thanks for the help. Good luck with the issue.

Same here – I think – no complaints from the site owner since I renamed the file.

Trick with renaming the file to “object-cache.php.OFF” helped me too with a website hosted at GoDaddy. However this caused another plugin (PODS framework) to end up in a Fatal Error crashing the entire website.

I resolved the above issue by installing additional plugin:
    “Pods Alternative Cache”.

I disabled the object cache by renaming the file again and now both PODS and GCal Events are functioning with no errors, phew…

    Thank you guys very much!!!

    Hey Everyone,

We have released version 3.0.0 so we suggest you update to that when you get a chance. There are a lot of changes so we also suggest reading through this first for more details about the update: https://docs.simplecalendar.io/update-2-4-to-3-x/

If you want to try changing back the object-cache and seeing if it works then please let me know if it does so I can resolve this issue ??

    Thanks!
