I’m updating several WP sites & getting the same error message on all but 2 sites that were successful! I updated all plugins & themes before attempting to update to 4.0. I get this: “Preparing to install the latest version…

The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.: (VERY LONG LIST)”

Because of this repeated failure, I downloaded the latest 4.0 zip file, extracted the contents and uploaded manually using FTP and following the instructions on the WP site.

When I logged back into the 1st site, I now see this: Fatal error: Class ‘WP_Session_Tokens’ not found in /home/empower/public_html/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 879

I downloaded the zip file again and uploaded by FTP and nothing changed. Obviously I will not proceed to the other sites now.

It appears that there is something wrong with the zip file, yet I don’t see anyone else talking about this problem!

    1) Why am I getting this Session Tokens message?

    2) Why am I getting the inconsistent file permissions message?

    Thank you,
    LuAnn

Check the permissions for the folders in the wordpress root folder

Are you using any plugins? Try disabling them temporarily why installing the update. Also sometimes custom themes may be an issue.

To manually disable a plugin or theme, go into the wp-content folder of the WordPress installation and locate the directory for said plugin or theme and rename the folder (“-old” at the end of it will do). This will disable it.

Then update WordPress (making sure not to overwrite the wp-config.php file or the wp-content folder).

Once everything is back up and running, start testing your plugins and themes – to re-enable those manually disabled ones, again, go into the appropriate folder and rename the folder back to normal. Do this one at a time so you can test them between each “re-enabling”. If you see the error again, note which one you last enabled and contact the developer for support.

Thanks, juggledad. That worked. Everything looks as it should now that I’ve logged in. Thanks!! But now I’ve got to do that 5 more times!!

bemdesign, I forgot to say that NONE of the plugins that are there are active. I made sure of that. Thanks for the additional info. Will watch out for that.

I have a similar problem. When I try to login to my site I see:
Fatal error: Class ‘WP_Session_Tokens’ not found in /hermes/bosoraweb123/b60/ipg.johnvandalencom/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 884

I asked for a password reset using the username email address.
I got the reset email from WordPress with a link to follow to reset the password. When I went to the link, I saw “Sorry, that key does not appear to be valid.”

    What do I try next?
