Fatal error: Can't use method return value in write context

I just installed AAM, but when I try to click on any of the tabs below “Backend Menu” I see the following error:
Fatal error: Can’t use method return value in write context in /home/(address etc.)/plugins/advanced-access-manager/Application/Backend/view/metabox.phtml on line 8
Any idea what’s up?
