I had been using the previous version without any problems. Today I saw the 3.6 update and did the update through the WP backend as normal. This resulted in my entire site going to the white screen. After a bit of troubleshooting, I found that if I manually went in via FTP and deleted the WP Ultimate CSV Importer plug-in, my site returned to normal.

    (WHEW!)

However, when I try reinstalling it (via the WP backend), as soon as I try to activate it, I get an error: “Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”

Any suggestions on what to do?

We already upgraded in our live demo here https://demo.smackcoders.com/demowptwo/wp-admin/admin.php?page=wp-ultimate-csv-importer/index.php&__module=dashboard without any issues and no other users reported such error. Deactivate the plugin from admin and install 3.6 as fresh install. This should work. If not let us know with more details like log etc.

    Is this multisite?

(Sorry for the delay; I never got notification.)

This is not multisite. This is plain vanilla WP 3.9.1.

I’ve now deactivated, deleted, reinstalled, re-[tried] to activate it, about 20 times now. I always do it through the Add New function, not via manual FTP. (But I do have FTP access if you want me to try that.)

I’ve also used WP-Optimize to clean my tables.

I’m totally stumped. Any further suggestions? (You mention a log but I’m not sure what log you would want or how to get it.)

Kindly update to 3.6.2 and post the results. If you still face same issue let us know with more details.

Did you mean 3.6.1 or 3.6.2? As of today, the latest appears to be 3.6.1.

I did try updating to 3.6.1 and am getting the same results. If 3.6.2 is about to be released momentarily, I will try it as soon as it’s public.

From users report 3.6.1 has solved this issue. This may be because of some other conflict. Try deactivating other plugins.

    Thread Starter ddas

    (@ddas)

I can’t be sure that this is the cause, but on my main site and also on my clone, I’ve now discovered that there might be a conflict with a sub-plugin of Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) called “Easy Digital Downloads – CSV Manager.” (I’ll call it EDD-CSV)

(Yes — I need that plug-in — Ultimate CSV Importer doesn’t do that type of CSV import as far as I can tell.)

Easy Digital Downloads itself seems to be fine. I’ve succeeded in activating Easy Digital Downloads and Ultimate CSV Importer and now they are both happy.

However, if I have those two activated, and try to activate EDD-CSV, I get errors or a white screen. If I have EDD and EDD-CSV activated, and try to activate Ultimate CSV Importer, I get a fatal error.

Basically, no combination of EDD-CSV and Ultimate CSV Importer works properly.

But this used to work fine, a few weeks ago. Any chance you could look into whether there’s a conflict there or whether there is something unique to my site/database?

(Both EDD and EDD-CSV are free plug-ins.)

What’s the exact error message you get?

    Thread Starter ddas

    (@ddas)

Going through it step-by-step now in my sandbox site:

    1. To start, EDD is deactivated, EDD-CSV is activated, and Ultimate CSV is activated.

    2. I activate EDD. I get a white screen. I reset this by going into the FTP and renaming the EDD plug-in folder temporarily. Then I reload my admin area, it works, and the Plug-ins page tells me EDD has been deactivated due to an error (file doesn’t exist). This makes sense.

    NEXT ATTEMPT:

    1. EDD is newly deactivated. I also deactivate EDD-CSV. Ultimate CSV is activated.

    2. I activate EDD. It activates normally.

    3. I now activate EDD-CSV. I get the white screen, which, again, I resolve by renaming plug-ins by FTP.

    THIRD ATTEMPT:

    1. I make sure all three plug-ins are deactivated.

    2. I activate EDD then EDD-CSV. Both activate normally.

    3. I then activate Ultimate CSV. It gives me this error: “Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.” (There is no further text to explain.)

I’m using the latest versions of everything.

I had the trio working fine up until a few weeks ago. Actually what triggered it was: I was in the WP back-end doing a routine update to Ultimate CSV, and while it was updating, it hung. After half an hour, I eventually had to close the browser window. I knew this update may or may not be complete, but from that point on, the above problems started, and I couldn’t get Ultimate CSV activated any more. (Hence the top of this thread.) Only today did I connect the dots that it might be somehow linked to EDD-CSV.

I’m working in a sandbox site and would be happy to grant access to any developer who wants to see it for themselves. (Or I can do a screen cap video.)

    Thanks everyone!

Pippin, to update you, Smackcoders looked into it and believes they found the problem and it will be fixed in the next update of Ultimate CSV.

    Glad to hear it!
