Hey guys, I’m new here though I’ve been developing WP sites for years. I normally install via cPanel/Fantastico (yes, shared server) on new client sites and have had no major issues. However, the WP site I need to do now has to be installed without using the clients existing domain – in other words, installed on an IP – not a domain name. I assume this is a walk in the park if you install outside of Fantastico.

However, Fantastico only lets you use a domain name to install to, not an IP. So come login time to the admin panel – WP is looking for the domain name, not the IP.

I know this is a domain mapping issue. But can some one please explain what’s the easiest way to do what I’m trying to achieve. I’d like to simply tell all WP related URL’s to go to the IP not the domain name. I can’t put a redirect on the clients domain name because I don’t host it (yet).

    Thanks

  • Why not install in a subdirectory or a test site and later move after your work is done?

Hi Krishna, I thought of that but already have a bloated list of sub domains so trying to just install on the destination server to cut out steps later. It should be really simple. I’ve also thought of doing a find/ replace all in the raw SQL but again, I’m hoping to hear of something simpler from the experience in this forum. Thanks for your reply.

Not subdomain, but create a folder (sub-directory) of the same domain.

Same issue – my main domain is bloated with both sub-domains and sub-directories. Trying to keep it clean and lean.

I’ve solved this problem myself. The simplest way I found was to use ‘phpMyAdmin’ as described in the solution here.

    Hope this helps. Thanks.
