Fantastic migration assistant
-
I develop themes locally using Vagrant and as I’m working my end-user is making changes to an online demo site. I use this plugin to migrate between my local installation and the online demo. WordPress migrations are usually a colossal PITA but this is so easy it almost feels like cheating. You don’t even have to manually FTP your wp-content folder! And the built-in rewrite rules make it super easy to migrate between different domains!
Some people seem to be getting particularly salty about the .wpress format that the plugin uses, and how this isn’t good for making historical archives of your site because if this plugin is abandoned and breaks in the future then you won’t be able to restore your site. This is true, but it is also missing the point. This plugin doesn’t pretend to be a backup plugin, it’s a migration plugin. For me having the entire site contained within a single file including all your media, and this potentially huge file being able to be uploaded via the WordPress backend bypassing file size limits, outweighs the fact that it isn’t a great solution for creating archivable backups.
