Jetpack Boost seems to have an issue with generating critical CSS – the tool throws an error message when I try to manually regenerate. And yet, the Overall Score seems to adjust when I run the tool. I’ve verified that the Boost plugin is activated.

This is the error message I receive: https://www.screencast.com/t/UDFClD4rnVbx (apparently embedding from URL doesn’t currently work).

Is Boost actually working? Or is there an issue on my end? I recently installed some additional security headers in Cloudflare/purged the cache but don’t know if this would affect Boost. Thank you!

    Hi @alwilliams006,

From the error message and the steps mentioned, it seems like there might be a discrepancy between the URL structure set in your WordPress settings and the one being used by Jetpack Boost.

Here’s what you can do to resolve the issue based on the screenshot guidance:

    1. Verify URL Match: Please check that the protocol (http or https) and the host name (the domain name of your site) in your WordPress Administration Screen matches exactly with the URL you are trying to use in Jetpack Boost. This includes checking for ‘www’ versus non-‘www’, http versus https, or any other subdomain differences.
    2. Check with Hosting Provider: If the URLs do match and you’re still encountering issues, it may be related to the recent security headers you’ve set up in Cloudflare. Security configurations can sometimes prevent Jetpack from generating Critical CSS by blocking access to resources needed for the process. Contacting your hosting provider or reviewing your Cloudflare settings to ensure that Jetpack Boost’s requests are not being blocked could be the next step.
    3. Purge Cloudflare Cache: Since you’ve mentioned purging the cache, make sure that all relevant caches are cleared after making changes to Cloudflare settings. This includes any caching plugins you might have on your WordPress installation as well.
    4. Retry Critical CSS Generation: After confirming the URL structure and ensuring that there are no blocks from the security headers, try regenerating the Critical CSS.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, please let us know. We’re here to help you get Jetpack Boost running smoothly on your site.

    Hello Alin,

Thank you so much for your reply. I touched base with my hosting provider, and they checked my Cloudflare settings and didn’t notice any issues that would interfere with the Jetpack plugin. They also cleared my Cloudflare and WordPress caches (as I have done as well) and tried to regenerate the Critical CSS, but to no avail.

I also verified (or thought I did) that the URLs matched.

Lastly, this was all done after I disabled the security headers in Cloudflare. For kicks and giggles, I also tried deactivating my caching plugin. That didn’t work either.

Is it worth trying to reach out to Cloudflare?

Thank you so much for your help! I greatly appreciate it!

I’m having the same problem and I have not changed any settings since the last regeneration.

It seems highly unlikely that two, unconnected people will encounter the same problem, unless there is a problem not related to our personal systems.

    Hi @alwilliams006,

Thank you for following the troubleshooting steps and sharing the details with us.

Is it worth trying to reach out to Cloudflare?

In this case, reaching out to Cloudflare could be a good step, as they might offer insight into any settings or security measures that could still be affecting Jetpack Boost’s functionality. Since the hosting provider did not identify any issues with Cloudflare settings that would interfere with Jetpack, further investigation with Cloudflare’s support might uncover nuances in the setup that are not immediately apparent.
