I’ve been a WordPress user for just over 8 months. My background is computer science and software engineering, which may be why I like the ‘classic’ interface over the new Gutenberg editor. To me ‘classic’ is simpler.

Now, after a few days of using Gutenberg, I’m starting to like it. I don’t use the multi-media features so really can’t comment on those. But, for text, it works well enough. I don’t like change for change sake, but if Gutenberg makes it easier for newcomers to the platform, Yay! I would suggest a “block” type that acts just like the old editor. Then if you pick one of those blocks your old work flows still work.

I’ve been installing and maintaining WP sites for clients for several years. I agree – the current dashboard works well for me. If Gutenberg becomes the default dashboard in 5.0+ versions, I’ll either stick with 4.9+ or switch to another simpler CMS. If anything, I’d prefer developers stick to improving the WP core to reduce its bulk (smaller and less files & folders). Keep It Simple!

It is not supported to stay on 4.9, and I would highly recommend against it, however you can install the “Classic Editor” plugin and you will stay on the old editor in 5.0 and beyond. We have announced the classic plugin will be officially supported until 2022.

I really hate the new editor. Thanks for the tip that I can find a plug-in to return to the classic editor. Like mentioned in this thread, I am an old-school coder and am much, much more comfortable with the “classic” editor. Those who decide to make these changes without warning or preview deserve lumps of coal in their Christmas stockings.
