• Hi everyone, Please help I cannot connect to FTP site from wordpress 2.8. I am absolutely sure I entered the correct hosts, username and password but it fails to connect all the time.

    What should I do?

  • Might check with your host.

If you continue this thread please explain what your are trying to do when you experience the problem–like upgrading a plugin.

    Hi,

Instead of the hostname try to use IP address of your domain/server and ask your hosting service provider to synchronize FTP password again..

    Thanks,

    Shane G.

Thank you Shane. I have tried your suggestions already still doesn’t work.

I’m trying to add plugins from the WordPress admin area because this is the easiest way to do it.

Any idea why it doesn’t work for me.

Not all hosting situations may support the ‘auto’ upgrade of plugins. If you are sure you have the correct FTP and it doesn’t work, then Managing_Plugins#Installing_Plugins is one method of installing/updating plugins.

Same problem here. This was a bear to figure out, since the log files are rather cryptic.

I knew that my username and password were in fact correct, and that permissions were also correct on the appropriate directories. I confirmed that a command line ftp login worked. The forums on WordPress were filled with complaints with answers that all focused on these two issues, so I knew this wasn’t the path to the answer.

I noticed that the command line ftp login process took a fair amount of time. So I began to suspect a timeout problem. But I couldn’t find a timeout setting for WordPress – at least until I came across wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-ftpext.php, which contains a variable var $timeout = 5 near the top of the file. Changing this to 20 eliminated the login problem.
