I hate to add yet another upgrade problem to the pile…

I tried to do an automatic upgrade from 2.9.2 to 3.0. this ended in a white screen showing that the page was done loading…

(my bad I did not read much before doing this and did NOT disable my plugins – not sure if it matters)

Trying to view the site gave a an error in a php file, – I searched it, could not find the specific error, and said, “screw it. I’m restoring from backup” – my bad I did not document the error…

Anyway, I restored my ftp files, and the site is running again (www.sci-guys.com)

    BUT

I am unable to access the administrative functions.
when I logon I get a notification of the following:

    “Database Upgrade Required

WordPress has been updated! Before we send you on your way, we have to upgrade your database to the newest version.

The upgrade process may take a little while, so please be patient.”
(with a button to do it)

now, I use sitevault to backup, and have never done a restore with it before.

BUT since my site starting working again, I guess I must have replaced at least part of what was done during the upgrade.

I suspect that I should do a manual upgrade, but I’m unsure at this point. If I were to do that, what is the correct way to disable the plugins, since I can’t get to the dashboard?

    Thanks for any assistance!!!

  • I’d suggest putting the v3.0 files back up again and re-running the upgrade via Admin/Tools. But disable all plugins first – if necessary by resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

This appears to have worked. Thank you!

    One question tho

I disabled my plugins using the FTP method:

    Create an empty plugins folder

    * Via FTP or your host’s control panel, navigate to the wp-contents folder (directory)
    * Via FTP or your host’s control panel, rename the folder “plugins” to “plugins.hold”
    * Via FTP or your host’s control panel, create new folder called “plugins”
    * Login to your WordPress administration menus
    * Via FTP or your host’s control panel, delete the empty “plugins” you previous created
    * Via FTP or your host’s control panel, rename

And by re-enabling the plugins, I can confirm that it was a plugin that was causing my issue (because I get the failure again)

I’m going to move the plugins back one at a time to determine the problematic ones. or might there be a better way?

Nope. The one-at-a-time restore is the best way.

I think the “one at a time” method is the only sure way of identifying which plugin(s) caused the problem.

that is what I did, and it is the TSG Podcasting plugin

    https://podcastingplugin.com/

all the rest of mine (that I use at least) were fine.

Thank you for all the help!
