Actuall I think I have struggled enough. My site is

I use motopress to edit the pages and the theme is virtue. As I stated before I have used the above code to get the mouseover effect but now stuck where and what code needs to be added to get the smooth transition.

You can’t transition with css if your using a mouseover event and switching the image.

Javascript would be the way to do it with images.

You can use a sprite and transition the background position which won’t give you a fade but allow you to have some movement.
