The Publicize plugin is not working when it comes to posting to my Facebook Page. 80-90% of the time, instead of it publishing as a thumbnail with the title and an excerpt, instead, it simply posts a URL with this appended to the end “/ ?fb_source=pubv1 ”

I then have to delete this post, run the original URL through Facebook’s debugger and manually share the link on my page. This is the only time it will work.

In addition, anytime someone hits the “Like” button on one of my posts, it does the same thing (no pretty thumbnail, just the URL/ ?fb_source=pubv1 ) until I’ve run the URL through Facebook’s debugger.

The odd time (10% maximum) the system works with no problems, but most of the time this is the problem I am having.

Note: I have a featured image set for every post and all posts are scheduled to publish at a future time (i.e. I don’t write a post on my WordPress site and publish it right away; I use the scheduling feature – I don’t know if this makes a difference).

I have seen a couple “solutions” in forums, but am unsure how they work. I’ve seen some coding to add, but not sure which .php I should paste it into and I saw one person say if you change the permalink structure it may resolve the issue, but I don’t want to do that as I have over 3 years worth of posts and don’t want to change their permalinks.

My site is https://www.liberonetwork.com and my hosting company is Bluehost.

    Help would be much appreciated!

PS – I do understand the basics of CSS; however, I am not a “pro” so if you have coding tips, the more specific you can be with how to use them, the better ??

    Hi there,

I’ve tried to reproduce this on a test site but everything works as expected. I’ve also checked everything on our end and everyting on your site looks fine. The next time you publish a post, could you leave it in it’s “unfixed” state so I can have a look? I’ve looked at your current posts and everything looks fine.

Thanks so much for the response. I will let you know when the next article is published and I will be sure not to run it through the Facebook Debugger.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Richard,

So last night I published a post without using the scheduling feature (usually all our posts are scheduled) and it seemed to work without any problems. Here is the URL to the post: https://www.liberonetwork.com/how-i-keep-stress-at-bay and here is the URL to the Facebook post: https://www.facebook.com/liberonetwork/posts/620060298006451

This morning a scheduled post was published and it was fine, too! (ie the thumbnail image showed up on facebook and it wasn’t a weird URL) however, you will notice if you hit the “like” button on the post, it doesn’t show the thumbnail. I have not run it through the Facebook debugger yet like you requested. Here is the URL: https://www.liberonetwork.com/escaping-from-everyday-life and the URL to where it appeared on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/liberonetwork/posts/620314697981011

I have noticed that sometimes it will work with publishing scheduled posts on facebook and sometimes it will just post the URL with to weird ” ?fb_source=pubv1″ at the end and no thumbnail. However, it is a continual problem that the “like” button never works properly until the URL has been run through Facebook’s debugger.

Thanks for taking the time to help! And I will let you know if tomorrow’s post shows up on facebook without a thumbnail.

    Hi!

So FB complains about the image sizes:

    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.liberonetwork.com%2Fescaping-from-everyday-life

Yet the images are more than 200px, so I think this is a FB issue. I have no idea why it says this, though:

Provided og:image is not big enough. Please use an image that’s at least 200×200 px. Image ‘https://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/192x/e5/d2/16/e5d2166dcc99f20a74e4104f9bd6dd99.jpg’ will be used instead.

Is that an image from your site somewhere?

    https://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/192x/e5/d2/16/e5d2166dcc99f20a74e4104f9bd6dd99.jpg

I don’t know why they’d pick that particular image.

Another thing I noticed is that it gave a 206 response code: https://100pulse.com/http-statuscode/206.jsp

I’ve never seen that kind of response code before. It did make me wonder, though: are you using any sort of cloud-based or plugin-based caching on your site? I don’t see any evidence of it, but maybe it’s well-hidden. ??

I think at this point you should ask here for help: https://developers.facebook.com/support/

One more thing: I noticed you have the Google Analytics code loading twice. I don’t know if that’s necessary or even if it’s a bad thing, but maybe you should check which plugins are doing that; one of them is Yoast’s plugin, but I don’t know what the other one is.

Lastly, your question regarding “?fb_source=pubv1” ; that’s added to links by Publicize to help in statistics tracking; by adding a query like that, your Google Analyitcs can help you better understand where your traffic is coming from. A link with ?fb_source=pubv1 is thus clearly identified as coming from FB and from a Publicized link.

Hope all of this helps some!

Thanks so much for the info! I am not sure where that image comes from – and though I used to have Yoast installed on the site, it is no longer there (neither in the active nor deactivated plugins).

Thanks for explaining everything to me – I’ll take another look at my plugins and see what is doing what.

Thanks again for the help – I may post again if a future post doesn’t get published correctly and I’ll look into contacting Facebook.

    (@laurenbersaglio)

This morning’s scheduled post had the usual problem – showing only a URL with “?fb_source=pubv1” and the “like” button doesn’t generate a thumbnail.

Here is a link to where it was published on Facebook, you will notice no thumbnail etc… (and it does have an assigned feature image so that is not the problem) https://www.facebook.com/liberonetwork/posts/620719844607163

And here is a link to the article on the site: https://www.liberonetwork.com/managing-the-stress-of-college

There are SO many posts on the forum with others having this exact same problem with Publicize for Facebook – there must be a solution? I saw someone posted code that will prevent “”?fb_source=pubv1″” from being appended to shared posts but they did not say which .php file to input the code to.

Is it really a Facebook issue? I can’t help but think it has something to do with wordpress…

    Thanks!

    Hi Lauren,

On my test site with the default TwentyTwelve theme and no other plugins, I’m unable to reproduce this. Whenever I post anything, it goes to Facebook with the proper post title, and the proper image (larger than 200px by 200px). There must be something in your site that’s causing the issue. Facebook still complains about the image sizes for that post, for example:

    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.liberonetwork.com%2Fmanaging-the-stress-of-college

What plugins do you have installed and active? Also, I see that your theme is a premium theme, so I won’t be able to test it, but I’ll see what I can do with your list of plugins.

    Thread Starter laurenbersaglio

    (@laurenbersaglio)

I do not know why Facebook keeps complaining about the size – that is really strange.

Here is a list of the plugins I currently have on my site:

    ACTIVE PLUGINS:

    Akismet
    All In One SEO Pack
    Blogger Importer
    Contextual Related Posts
    Default featured image
    Digg Digg
    Etsy Widget
    Google Analytics for WordPress
    HeyPublisher Submission Manager
    IntenseDebate
    Jetpack by WordPress.com
    MailChimp Widget
    Pinterest RSS Widget
    Social Sharing Toolkit
    User Avatar
    WordPress.com Popular Posts
    WordPress Importer
WP-Leads (Free) – MailChimp, Constant Contact, and SalesForce.com Integration
    WP-reCAPTCHA
    WP Facebook Open Graph protocol
    WP to Twitter

    INACTIVE PLUGINS:

    Facebook Like Thumbnail
    Regenerate Thumbnails

    —–
I know that’s a really long list. Some of them I installed to try and fix this problem such as Facebook open graph, and the “Like thumbnail” etc…

    Thanks!

    (@richardmtl)

    Hi there,

Ok, so how about you try disabling a bunch of them like the following:

All In One SEO Pack (check if there are FB-related options in here ; there probably are and this might be what’s causing problems)
Default featured image (this may be interfering with the image that is sent to FB)
    Social Sharing Toolkit
    WP Facebook Open Graph protocol
    WP to Twitter

And then see what happens when you post again.

    Thread Starter laurenbersaglio

    (@laurenbersaglio)

Will do! I will see what happens – and then let you know.

    Thanks again!

Still having the problem! (sorry for the delay in response – I was away all summer). I’ve disable multiple plugins including All in One SEO and Digg Digg and still some posts will be scheduled and publish to Facebook with no problem and others will be published with no image and the weird /fb?….. code tagged to the back of the URL. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for it. Any other ideas?

    Thanks!

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

I’m afraid the problem is still the same: I looked at your 2 last posts, and Facebook returned the same error message for all 2 images inserted in these posts:

    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.liberonetwork.com%2Ftherapy-for-anxiety
    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.liberonetwork.com%2Fthe-value-of-therapy

Provided og:image is not big enough. Please use an image that’s at least 200×200 px.

However, in both cases the image was larger than 200x200px.

Have you tried to deactivate the “Default featured image” plugin?

If that didn’t help either, I’m afraid there isn’t much more we can do to help. I would suggest that you contact Facebook for help, and give them to examples I listed above:
    https://developers.facebook.com/support/
Only they will be able to say why Facebook isn’t able to recognize the images you’ve inserted into your posts.

    I hope this helps.

Hi Jeremy – I have disabled most of my plugins now including Default featured image. I have a new post scheduled for tomorrow morning so I will see if the problem has been resolved and get back to you.
    thanks!

    Hi!
