    Hello!

Since the last Jetpack update (version 4.7.1) the Facebook Page Widget has stopped working on my site dare2go.com! (I would think that this isn’t related to Publicize issue – the hot topic right now.)

I initially had it in my Footer and nothing showed. I inspected the footer with Firebug; there was only an empty <div> in my footer widget area 1.

I then moved things around, hoping it would re-register.
First try: swap Footer 1 with Footer 3 – now that had an empty <div> in Footer 3.

Next I moved the widget into my sidebar, where it’s now sitting between Google Translate (Jetpack) and my MailChimp sign-up form (a text widget). Yet when I inspect the page with Firebug there is NOTHING showing between the two.

I have some screen shots but there seems to be no option to upload them (and I don’t have the inclination nor time to open a new account with some free image hosting service just for this).

  • Same with me. I can’t find anything to fix this. Also, the Jetpack site says there is a widget titled Facebook Like box. There is no such widget on my dashboard. The old one does not work as Webeetle stated, and I don’t see any way of downloading a new one.

Could you both post your site URLs here, so I can have a look?

@tgc5308 Could you go to Appearance > Widgets in your dashboard, and look for a plugin named “Facebook Page Plugin (Jetpack)”? You’ll want to move that widget over to one of your widget areas, and adjust the widget settings.

If the widget is still not displayed properly on your site, could you let me know your Facebook Page URL so I can take a closer look?

    Thanks!

@webbeetle I looked into this a bit more, and found this bug report on Facebook:
    https://developers.facebook.com/bugs/198578040629588/?comment_id=198803920615627

It seems Facebook recently made some changes to their widgets, and doesn’t display widgets anymore when a Page has restrictions in place.

This occurs when the Page has any restrictions, such as age, country, etc.
Plugins only work for completely public pages.
Easiest way to check if this is to case is to try to load the page in an incognito window.

    I hope this helps.

Hmm. I don’t have any restrictions on my Facebook pages. I removed the widget. I’ll remove it on my other site also.

@tgc5308 Do you see the widget as available under Appearance > Widgets in your dashboard?

Could you also let me know your Facebook Page URL, so I can run some tests on my end?

    Thanks!

Im having the same problem on my site https://www.pennyroadpub.com. I have moved the widget down to the bottom until I can get it working again. Any ideas. our facebook page does not have any restrictions, and the link to the page works, it just wont display the page..

@monmixr Access to your Facebook Page is restricted; I can’t actually access it from my Facebook account:

You can reproduce the issue by loading the Facebook Page in an incognito window as well.

Sorry that I come back to this so late – we have been into the Amazon lowlands of Peru (our blog is a travel blog!) and there was no mobile data available! I didn’t expect it either…

Now I checked our page in a ‘Private Window’ in Firefox – Our Dare2Go-Page ids freely accessible!

I also went into the settings of our page (as suggested by Facebook) to check:

Country restrictions Page is visible to everyone.
Age restrictions Page is shown to everyone.
Page moderation No words are being blocked from the Page.
        Profanity filter Set to medium

So I’m sorry to say, but that the widget is not working anymore has nothing to do with any such restrictions on my page!

I hope your search for the reason continues…
(ps: we’re still in the Amazon region so my internet access will be patchy at best)

    Is this your Facebook Page?
    https://www.facebook.com/Dare2go/

It seems to be publicly accessible indeed, and using that Facebook Page on a test site of mine works:
    https://i.wpne.ws/jo59

It also works on your site:
    https://i.wpne.ws/jo8K

If you don’t see it on your end, it might be because of your internet connection; it could also be blocked by one of your browser add-ons or an anti virus; ad blocker and privacy browser extensions can indeed sometimes block social widgets.

If you get access to a different computer or a different network during your travels, it might be worth trying to access your site from there, to see if Facebook’s widgets are still blocked.

Yes, Jeremy: the widget is available on my dashboard. When I try to use it in the sidebar, only a blank space shows up on the home page.

The Widget appears to work well on my test site, when using your Page’s URL:
    https://i.wpne.ws/jovw
    https://i.wpne.ws/jpDl

Could you make sure your problem isn’t caused by browser add-ons or your anti virus, as I mentioned in the post above yours?

    Thanks!

    Thanks, Jeremy!

I just tested in Chrome (or in my case SRWare Iron Browser) and, in deed, the widget shows in the sidebar. Sorry about that!

I recently updated Firefox, my preferred browser because I have a long history with it, to version 52. Maybe that messed something up. *)
I certainly didn’t change or add any browser add-ons. Being on the road, with very limited internet access, means I never have much online time to play with things, add new features, or test things extensively.

From my point of view you may now really close this ticket – unless others want to jump in with similar problems. Once again: sorry about the panic. At least I know where to look.

*) although: I seem to recall that after the update I tested our new home page version (still not up) and it did work okay. Mystery…

    Jeremy:

Aha! I tried my site in Chrome and there is the Facebook widget. So like Webbettle, the problem may be my browser or an add on in the browser.
