Facebook likes gone after post update

    Hi guys,

    I just updated one of my previous posts (edited the pictures) and now all my Facebook likes are gone… What?! Does anyone have an idea of what might have happened or what I did wrong? I did change the permalink since it was way too long; could that be it?

  • Yes, Changing permalinks reset’s your Facebook likes, because Facebook likes count is based on a Specific URL share/like.

    Ah, I was afraid that was the issue… Any chance on restoring it?

    Unfortunately, LaraBrus, no. Or, not really, not without hacking your theme by writing some janky code to essentially fool Facebook. (This problem stems from how Facebook works, not how WordPress works.) Not recommended.

    Since it’s just one post, if those likes are important to you, have you considered switching back to the original permalink? That could restore the likes. And in most cases, readers do not arrive at a page by typing in the full URL, so likes could be more important than a short permalink.

    Thanks!! I thought I already changed the permalink back but nothing changed. But then I just checked the link I originally posted on facebook and discovered that I forgot one word ;). So now I changed it back and everything is fine. Thanks so much!
