Extremely Slow Site

  • Hello,

    My site is experiencing extremely slow load times. The blog page alone can take close to a minute to load after I clear my cache. I’ve looked through suggestions on this site and others but have had no luck so far. My website is a photography portfolio so it does contain a lot of images but I have resized these to smaller sizes to try to avoid this problem. Still, based on what I’ve done so far I suspect images might be part of the issue?

    So far I have:
    – Removed unnecessary plugins. Only have about 16 remaining
    – Contacted Bluehost who said my server looks fine
    – Deactivated all plugins to rule out those issues
    – Installed W3 Total Cache, Lazy Loud and Smush.it
    – Swapped out themes. This helped somewhat but the site was still very slow
    – Made lots of minor changes like deleting revisions, regenerating thumbnails, etc.

    A few ideas:
    what is the typical size of your images in KB or MB?
    have you checked your website using speedtest tools that might highlight slow areas?
    are you using a CDN to manage your images?
    are you using a plugin to control the display of the images?

    Thanks for responding.

    – My image size is around 100 KB for the main page and portfolio pages. My blog page images are usually no more than 300KB.

    – I have run a few speed tests which suggest browser caching, reducing server response time, minify CSS/HTML/JavaScript and optimizing images. I’ve done these things but nothing has really helped the speed.

    – I’ve tried to install a CDN plugin but it broke my image plugin(s) and the way my photos were displayed so I have it deactivated right now.

    – Yes, I use jQuery Masonry Image Gallery and Responsive Lightbox plus an image optimizer.

    Oops, missed your second post. Thanks for those resources.

    I tried Smush.it and bulk Smush.it last night hoping it would help but no luck. I’m going to try Imageoptim and Jetpack Photon next. Fingers crossed.
