I am experiencing the same problem.
here is a test page:

https://publicdomain4u.com/cripple-clarence-lofton-monkey-man-blues-mp3-download

the external mp3 url i entered is:

[audio src="https://archive.org/download/MonkeyManBlues/Monkey%20Man%20Blues.mp3" /]

but the seemingly uneditable and non-working url the player contains now is:

[audio src="https://publicdomain4u.com/files/https://archive.org/download/MonkeyManBlues/Monkey%20Man%20Blues.mp3" /]

Wondering – what would code for a playlist look like then, using all external URLs?

Also, can I style that single-mp3 player so it looks like an Audio player? That’s my only problem with the single-file player is it shows up as a larger video-style player, without
the track info and mp3 download link.

For the audio, just use this:
