• Hey there! Lame guy here. ??

    I have this question:

Can you export wp posts and pages when you moved the folders of the installation to a new server BUT you did not moved the old database and now you don’t have it anymore and the site is inaccessible? ?? (Yes, that lame am I…)

Exporting the contents will help me just installing a fresh copy of the site and import whatever was published. But I don’t know how to access the site now in order to export the old contents.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Unless you have a backup copy of the database somewhere, I am afraid you are out of luck. All of the post, pages, comments, etc., contents are kept in the database, not in the file folders.

It would be worth contacting the hosting service of the old site to see if they still have a copy of the database.

I got an old backup. Now what? I should import it through the CPanel?

Sorry for the delay in responding. I am on the road with limited web access

You can import the file using phpMyAdmin or a similar tool, but you will probably need to search and replace the old domain name (if it changed) and the data path. You can use the tool described in this article: https://interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/

The tricky part is finding out the old and new path names. If you use a text editor to examine the .sql file, look for a path that looks something like /home/domain/public_html/. That should be the old path. Your hosting service should be able to give you the new path.

Just be very careful when using the search and replace tool. If you make a mistake, you will need to reload the database and start over.

Once you have done the replacements, you should be able to log in to the site using the same credentials that you used on the old server.
