Export online database to local

I need to do some local template editing on a live site but I do not want to disturb the live version so I installed xampp and I exported the database from the online one, imported into to the offline one and when I load up my site locally offline it redirects me to the online version, I am assuming because of some odd occurrence in the database or obscure option I forgot to check off, how can I get around this? Thanks
