I am just wondering what happens when a credit card expires for a subscription?

I found no way to edit the credit card in the profile. So do customers have to cancel a subscription and then subscribe again using the new credit card?

    Thanks

    Hi @chuyqwerty,

Once the credit card expires, the payment will fail and subscription goes on hold. Currently, the plugin does not have the option to edit payment details. The customer would require to purchase again to activate the subscription.

We will consider payment editings for future enhancement of our plugin.

This is a very big issue we have at the moment with our subscribers and becoming one of our number 1 support issues.

This is incredibly unintuitive for users because they usually just click the “payment method” tab in their account page and add the new card there thinking it will update the card for the subscription which it doesn’t.

There’s absolutely no way for them to update the card BEFORE it expires so they have to wait for the payment to fail then go through the super confusing flow of clicking “manage” on the subscription, scrolling down to the order history section then clicking the “Pay” button to go through the checkout process again in order to renew the subscription. This seems crazy to me that a paid plugin this popular and widely used hasn’t bothered to put any effort into updating credit cards which everyone has to do every few years and is an issue that can/does result in lost subscribers/revenue.

This is not only causing us to lose subscribers & burn time on support tickets but it’s also embarrassing that we’re using such a clunky unintuitive system in 2018 when everyone just takes for granted that you should be able to do something as simple as updated your credit card’s expiration date on a subscription.

This is a big enough problem for us at this point that we have to reallocate dev time from actually working on our own product to figuring out a way to add credit card update capabilities to Woocommerce subscriptions.

Same here, we have long term subscriptions, and we inevitably miss payments or even subscribers when this occurs. It seems like a software that focuses on subscriptions should allow the customer to update (or change) the credit card, and allow us to immediately reprocess the subscription to keep it on track.

The same here. Unbelievable this is happening.

I’m kind of stunned. This is a SUBSCRIPTION product that we all pay a lot money towards… when someone’s credit card expires, they have to be able to edit it, not make a purchase all over again, either in advance or after (at any time really).
This needs to be added soon or I’ll be moving to another product.

This is a big problem for us. Many of our members are grandfathered in at a different price. Please fix this.

I hadn’t realised that my card had expired and to renew I have been asked for 10 YEARS up front!!!!!! $293……..REALLY???????

This is a problem for us as well. Is there any update on when this will be fixed?

It looks like “change payment” deals with this, right?

@birdsandbeans where is “change payment”? is that something in the subscription page on the WP dashboard? Or are you referring to the documentation?

@jasonpiersonawana in the customer facing account page, it is one of the actions on the subscription detail page. I’m in test mode, so I’m still figuring out how to configure. It may be a bit awkward as it is intended to change the credit card rather than to update the expiry.

Sadly, this option would help a lot. either change card or choose renewal date

This is insanity if this still has not been resolved? I have been helping my client get set up with Woocommerce subscriptions and this very thing has been losing them a lot of money. Anyone have any updates on this?

    Is this still an issue?

Hopefully now a better solution has been added? I guess where the subscriber updates their credit card (or adds a new one) then Subscriptions would re-try the transaction?

Any updates on this? What do people currently do with Woo Subs and expired cards? Do you ask the expired users to go tot he site and subscribe again? What steps does a user have to take to get a sub up and running again?
