Expanded image size

Is there a maximum display for expanded images that show up after the thumbnail is clicked?
In Settings–> Media, I’ve tried to increase the Image Sizes (medium and large), but still the expanded images will only go to one square size, and not bigger.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
