Exit / leave / export back to stock wordpress?

    Hi there, I used to use NextGen some years ago (circa 2008-2010), and quite enjoyed the service. I now no longer wish to use this plugin as it’s very load-heavy on my server and offers little benefits (to me) over the existing media library built into WordPress. In fact, I’ve seen a spike of over ~60% RAM load increase since activating the plugin on my server. Pages load in 10s of seconds now. Not desirable to me.

    I would really like to integrate my old ngg media to the old wordpress media library. Without having to manually create every album/gallery again and change every post I made >8 years ago.

    Has this been documented before? Is there any existing plugins that can facilitate the exit?

  • Hi @neilisin,

    First, consider making some adjustments to see if the page load improves:

    1- Check your image sizes: The larger your images, the more dramatic the difference. We would suggest optimizing your images for the web by resizing them to 960px on the longest side before uploading to your site or through the Manage Gallery.

    2.- Check the first load vs subsequent load. Could you confirm whether or not after reloading your page with your gallery, if opening it up again in a different browser helps?

    3.- Remove any plugins you don’t need. Consider deactivating Jetpack, which together with NG for some reason seems to slow performance. A good plugin I would suggest to install to help you identify the larger plugins that use a lot of server resources: P3 Plugin Profiler (NextGEN will be one of them, because it is a large plugin, but it will help you identify others that you might consider deactivating and removing if you aren’t using them).

    4.- Optimize Your Database & Remove ‘Bloat’. Install and use WP-Optimize to help optimize your database tables and remove ‘bloat’ from your site (i.e. page & post revisions, spam comments).

    5.- Install a caching plugin. Some highly rated ones are: W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache

    Hi Gaby,

    Thanks for the response, however, it’s like you ignored my question and offered me on how to make your plugin work.

    I would really wish for support in leaving your product altogether. Nothing personal, I just don’t use it, don’t need it… it’s not you, it’s me! …kind of thing.

    Do you have a way/protocol to wind-down, export, migrate out? I ask before I do it manually as I would appreciate your support more than reinventing the wheel here.
